The third annual Energy Challenge is set to take place March 25 to April 22, 2010. This year, Collins has joined the Dorm Energy Challenge and 31 Greek Houses have signed on to compete in the Greek Energy Challenge.
The eight buildings to pilot the academic portion of the Energy Challenge include: Chemistry, Geological Sciences and Survey, Jordan, Kelley, Myers, Simon, SPEA, and the Wells Library!
Last Year's Results:
Teter was the winner of the RPS competition. Their prize is $4500, to be invested in a energy conservation equipment for Teter Residence Center. Sigma Alpha Mu was the Greek house winner and will receive $900.
The ten residence halls combined saved a total of 709,211 Kilowatts of electricity, a 59% increase over last year and 1,120,813 gallons of water, an 83% increase over last year. Approximately 1,103,532 pounds of avoided CO2 emissions and an estimated $42,000 in avoided utility costs resulted from this enormous conservation effort.
The eighteen Greek houses who participated saved a combined total of 30,975 kilowatts of electricity and 509,475 gallons of water. Their efforts attributed to 48,197 pounds of avoided CO2 emissions and an estimated utility cost savings of $5000.
Total pounds of avoided CO2 emissions: 1,150,729, equal to taking 96 cars off the road for an entire year!
