How the competition will work:
Competition duration: March 25th – April 22nd (4 weeks).
Over the course of the four week competition, participating dorms/houses will compete to reduce their electricity and water consumption. Participating dorms include: Eigenmann Hall, Briscoe Quad, McNutt, Foster, Ashton, Willkie, Forest Quad, Read Hall, Teter Quad, and Wright Quad. If you live in one of these dorms, you are automatically participating. Seventeen sororities and fraternities that have houses on campus will also take part.
*Note for Houses: There is a $50 registration fee for this competition---the savings from avoided water and energy costs should more than compensate for this fee by the end of the challenge. All house entry fees will be pooled together and awarded to the winning house as a cash prize.
The winning dorm/house will show the greatest percent decrease in per capita electricity and water consumption against their dorm’s 3 year usage baseline. The winning dorm/house will show the greatest combined reduction of energy and water use.
To account for differences in the efficiency of individual buildings, each dorm's/house's electricity and water consumption will be compared against a baseline of utility use. The baselines were calculated by averaging April usage data from the previous 3 years. Thus, participants will not be penalized for factors that are beyond their immediate control.
During the competition, IUB’s Physical Plant Utilities Utility Information Group will read utility meters on Mondays and Thursdays each week for dorms, once a week for houses.
Emerging results of the competition can be viewed on this website at any time.
The official winners of the IU Energy Challenge will be announced on Wednesday, April 22, Earth Day.
First and Second prizes will be awarded. All participants will receive a peace of mind for helping its environmental impact and keeping the university costs down.
Rules and Regulations
Participants are encouraged to review and implement the energy and water conservation tips.
Participants are expected to act fairly and with respect for others in their dorm and other competing dorms. Inappropriate behavior may result in a dorm or house being disqualified from the competition.
Participants are not permitted to alter/tamper with university owned infrastructure (lighting fixtures, faucets, etc.). For example, students are not permitted to remove light bulbs from university owned fixtures, which may cause permanent damage to the light fixture.
