Tips to Conserve

  • Take the stairs when possible.
  • Use cold water when doing laundry and hang dry if possible.
  • Turn off the lights if you're the last person out of the room (yes, even classrooms!).
  • Take shorter showers and/or cooler showers.
  • Set your computer to sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity.
  • Turn off and unplug appliances.
  • Turn off the water when you're brushing your teeth.


The Energy Challenge is a semesterly competition between various campus buildings, from dorms and apartments, academic buildings, athletic buildings, and Greek houses, to see who can save the most electricity and water over the course of the Challenge. During the 4 weeks, the usage of each building will be compared to own calculated baseline so not only are buildings competing against others, they are also trying to reach their own goals. The Spring 2018 Energy Challenge officially kicks off on Monday, March 19th and ends on April 16th...Check back on Thursday for the current rankings!

Climate change and environmental destruction are complex problems, and can seem too large for an individual to make a difference. However, just as IU is the sum of all Hoosiers, our impact on the environment is the collective sum of our actions. The Challenge’s goal is to demonstrate that living more sustainability is possible with small behavior changes. Our daily actions have a world-wide influence and it is ultimately up to us to decide what kind of impact we have. Our hope is that the Energy Challenge will show everyone that Hoosiers care about their impact.
